Joaquim de Almeida

Joaquim de Almeida is one of Portugal’s most internationally acclaimed actors, with a career spanning more than four decades across film, television, and theater. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, on March 15, 1957, he is renowned for his commanding screen presence, multilingual versatility, and memorable performances in both European and Hollywood productions. The son of two pharmacists, Joaquim initially studied at the Lisbon Conservatory before leaving Portugal following the democratic revolution of 1974. He continued his training in Vienna and later in New York, where he studied at the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Fluent in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German, Joaquim de Almeida built an exceptional international career, working extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Latin America. He first gained major international recognition with the acclaimed film Good Morning, Babylon (1987), directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani. Throughout his career, Joaquim has appeared alongside some of the most respected names in world cinema, including Harrison Ford in Clear and Present Danger (1994), Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in Desperado (1995), Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson in Behind Enemy Lines (2001), Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in the global blockbuster Fast Five (2011), and Sandra Bullock in Our Brand is Crisis(2015) His television work includes standout roles in internationally successful series such as 24, The West Wing, Queen of the South, CSI: Miami, The Mentalist, Bones, and Shōgun. Known for his ability to portray charismatic, complex, and often dangerous characters, Joaquim has become one of the most recognizable Portuguese actors worldwide. In addition to his international success, he has maintained a strong presence in Portuguese and European cinema, receiving numerous awards and nominations, including several Portuguese Golden Globes for Best Actor.
